Melbourne leisure centre secures gym with EasyGate SPT speedgates

Staff at Melbourne’s Keilor East Leisure Centre’s on-site gym can now spend more time with gymgoers and less time on admin, thanks to the recent installation of two lanes of EasyGate SPT speedgates.

The new speedgates, installed in April to secure the gym entrance, complement four lanes of EasyGate SPTs that have been helping to manage the flow of hundreds of thousands of visits each year to the leisure facility’s aquatic centre since it opened in 2021.

Entrance Control General Manager Michael Bystram said the installation was all about reducing pressure on the facility’s team while ensuring a smooth experience for visitors.

“Deploying automated access control to the gym with EasyGate SPT lets staff take a hands-off approach and spend more time doing what they do best – creating exceptional customer experiences.”

Consistent access control

The new speedgates safeguarding the gym include QR code readers to make it easy for members and casual visitors to gain entry by scanning QR codes from their mobile phones. The gates are also integrated with the leisure centre’s existing entrance control infrastructure, allowing the centre to manage both entry points through a single system and members to use their existing access cards seamlessly across both zones.

Bystram said multi-purpose facilities are increasingly seeing the benefits of investing in unified entrance control systems.

“Modern leisure centres tend to operate as holistic wellness destinations, with members enjoying different types of exercise sessions during a single visit, making it essential for access to different areas to be straightforward yet secure.”

Proven track record

EasyGate SPT is powered by a maintenance-free brushless Magnetic Direct Drive (MDD), which has allowed Keilor East Leisure Centre to silently process millions of visitors without any significant downtime since 2021.

Due to the potential for corrosion caused by pool sanitation chemicals carried by the air, the new speedgates are armoured with the same polished 316 marine grade stainless-steel finish that has kept the initial installation untarnished.

The overall reliability of the installation has been enhanced by Entrance Control’s pro-active ‘Platinum Service Plan’, which provides three maintenance visits per year to minimise reactive repairs, supported by extended parts warranties and factory-trained technicians.

Bystram said the facility’s decision to secure the entrance to its gym reflected years of proven performance from the original speedgates.

“The EasyGate SPT installation at Keilor East’s aquatic entrance has performed brilliantly for more than five years now, so it was only natural we handled the gym entrance installation as well.

“The new addition is a great example of one of many long-term partnerships we enjoy with some of Australia’s highest throughput buildings.”

Keilor East Leisure Centre welcomes around half a million visitors every year. It boasts an array of exercise opportunities, including a 50m heated outdoor pool, 25m indoor lap pool, indoor water playground, spa, sauna, café, crèche, gym and group fitness, wellness and cycle studio.
