Western Australia’s main electricity provider Western Power secured its $123M legacy infrastructure centre South Metro Depot with four lanes of EasyGate SPT speedgates, safeguarding the workforce behind Western Australia’s energy future.
The ultra-high-tech facility 30km south of Perth is an operational hub for up to 900 staff and 500 vehicles, and uses a state-of-the-art micro-grid powered by 10,000 square metres of solar panels to charge on-site vehicles and feed excess energy back into the network.
Entrance Control General Manager Michael Bystram said the depot installation in 2024 built on an earlier successful deployment of EasyGate SPT speedgates at Western Power’s Perth headquarters, demonstrating its confidence in their use to secure critical infrastructure.

The South Metro Depot is one of the most significant infrastructure investments in Western Power’s modernisation program, consolidating four metropolitan sites into a hub boasting 26,000 square metres of administration, operations, fleet and maintenance buildings.
It houses 34 electric vehicle charging stations, a drive-through loading area with 28 bays and a one-megawatt battery energy storage system – living up to the name ‘Boyli Mia’ meaning ‘Power House’ (gifted by local Noongar and Ballardong Elders) – plus Aboriginal artwork.
Taking advantage of the custom options available in the EasyGate SPT range, each speedgate at the depot has extra-secure 1,800mm-high glass barriers, on top of advanced infrared technology supporting 36 sensors to detect unauthorised access attempts.
With Entrance Control’s maintenance-free Magnetic Direct Drive motor powering EasyGate SPT, reliable and rapid operation is guaranteed even during peak-flow periods, while multiple safety sensors are poised to stop barriers from closing if a user is in a lane.
